WELCOME TO CONANICUT YACHT CLUB

Welcome Members and Friends to the CYC website ~

The Conanicut Yacht Club was incorporated on October 7, 1892 “for the purpose of encouraging yacht building and improvement in seamanship and the cultivation of naval science…”. A small parcel of land was purchased on Conanicus Avenue in Jamestown a year later. A covered pier and clubhouse were constructed and the fledging yacht club slowly grew in the “Gilded Age.” Members were primarily summer residents from Philadelphia, St. Louis, Chicago, Baltimore, New York and Providence.

A new clubhouse was built on the same site in 1917 and served the Club well until 1953 when Hurricane Carol destroyed the pier and damaged the clubhouse (though it remained standing). In 1955, the Club purchased the Knight/Lyons cottage and moved to the current waterfront location on Bay View Drive. Prior to that, in 1951, CYC bought the tennis courts on Shoreby Hill from the Conanicut Country Club, and racquet sports were added to the club’s activities.

With these improvements, the Club grew rapidly. In the 1970s, the baby boomers were coming of age and membership diversified from primarily summer residents to a mix of summer and year-round residents. In the late 1990s, paddle tennis courts were installed adjacent to the tennis courts, providing a popular winter activity for members. The Club is now open year round, offering sailing, cruising, racquet sports and social activities.

We are especially proud of our junior sailing and tennis programs, and of those members who have excelled in local, national and Olympic-level competition. Our signature event, the Around the Island Race, is held on Labor Day weekend and attracts the best sailors from around Narragansett Bay and beyond. The 2014 edition -- the 87th annual -- will be held on August 31.

We offer limited reciprocity to clubs listed in the Register of American Yacht Clubs and invite members and guests to visit and join us in our social activities including regular Friday TGIF dinner, the “Soup and Sloop” lecture series, "Epicurean" dinners, and other special events throughout the year.

CYC is in a fortunate position with a vibrant membership and capable and enthusiastic staff to ensure our programs and activities are carefully considered and run smoothly. During my term as Commodore, I look forward to continuing the Club's traditions while ensuring an enjoyable member experience for all generations.

Sincerely,

Susan Maffei Plowden, Commodore
