First Mates 2018

First Mates is a summer program for our 5-7 year old junior members, member's extended family and guests.  Children must be 5 before July 1st to participate.

Classes are limited to 10 participants.  Members have priority space until May 1.  After May 1, non-member guest registrations will be used to fill in the classes.  Members who register after May 1st will be accepted on a space available basis.

Registration Website:
https://www.familyid.com/conanicut-yacht-club-junior-sailing-programs/2018-cyc-junior-sailing-first-mates-program

Cost: $75/child/week for members; $100/child/week for non-members.

Member guests can include: grandchildren, nieces, and nephews and other relatives and friends. However, they are considered non-members and will be billed as such as per the CYC bluebook.

First Mates Sailing: Sailing is fun! The aim of this class is to help kids feel relaxed and confident in boats and have fun! Children will learn sailing basics in a safe environment.  They will be teamed up in pairs or in larger groups and sail in Prams and Hunter 140s with an instructor in each boat. Children will participate in activities related to sailing, seamanship, and the marine environment, including crabbing, net fishing to fill the Junior Sailing fish tank, taking water temperatures, and testing water depth in and around the CYC docks. Breaks for snacks and games will be included each morning.

Drop off for First Mates sailing is in the far end of the junior sailing room (room with a purple floor), which is under the back porch of the main club house.

First Mates SUPs & Kayaking: First Mates will take place from Fort Getty, where children will experience stand up paddle boarding and kayaking! Locally owned and operated company, Jamestown Outdoors, will provide boards, kayaks, and instructors for children to learn SUP and kayaking basics. There will also be shore-based instructors for those who would rather explore the shoreline and play in the sand. (Life jackets will be required due to the general swimming inexperience of this age group.) Children should bring the following: water bottle, snack, towel, sunscreen, water, hat, warm layer, anything else they’d like or need for a morning at the beach. Children should also bring a few dollars to get a Del’s Lemonade on the last day.

Drop off for SUPs & Kayaking is at Fort Getty across from the boat ramp where Jamestown Outdoors has a stand.

First Mates runs Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each week from 9:00am - 12:00pm.

2015: First Mates Enjoy Fabulous Farm Camp!!

Thank you to Vivi Valentine and Bill Hutchinson for graciously hosting the First Mates (5-7 year olds) on their incredible Cottrell Farm.  The Cottrell Farm is a virtual playground for animals, children and adults alike.  While the children performed farm chores and played with the animals they also explored the largely untouched property and learned much about the environment including the soil, native plants, composting, gardening, animal behavior and care!  Vivi and Bill led the tours and avidly entertained the children allowing them into both their modern home and the original 1700’s farmhouse.  They also shared their collection of found items from the property which includes what could be a revolutionary war period button!  All very cool and the group loved every minute.  Please see the photo gallery for pics of this awesome experience!
