Matt Gowell, a senior at East Greenwich High School, came from behind to place third out of 18 at the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) National High School Single-Handed Sailing Championships in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Gowell and several others had mediocre results during the first day's 9 races due to the light winds. Sunday's races were held in stronger winds so he was able to place well in the next 9 races to take third place by 2 points.
Sailors of all ages and abilities are invited to join the Junior Sailing Program for some round-the buoy racing or just messing about in boats. Fun racing will take place off the CYC dock. Bring your own boat or use one of ours. A casual cookout follow racing.
11:00 Round robin tennis tournament (regardless of ability)
1:00 Lunch at the hut
2:00 Racing on J-22s with an experienced captain on each boat
Ages 12-18
Sign up at the tennis courts or at the main clubhouse
The CYC Junior Sailing first session Awards Ceremony will be held at noon Friday, July 24th, on the clubhouse lawn. Awards and certificates will be presented to sailors in the Beginner, Intermediate, and Adventure Opti classes, as well as to those in the Messing About in Boats class. Refreshments will be served.
On Thursday July 9th CYC hosted the first NBYA 420 regatta of the season. Mike Marshall, coach of the CYC 420 racing class organized 16 CYC racers to race in all 8 of the CYC 420's- a major feat considering many of our sailors had less than 5 days of sailing time in the boats and many are completely new to racing 420's.
There were 48 boats from Yacht Clubs all over Narragansett Bay. Priscilla Szneke and Cory Sertl (Regatta Chair) functioned as mark boats and were ably assisted by parent volunteers, Luke Largess and Jim Breyer.
